Data centres have fascinated me for years. I vividly remember standing inside one while working in Spain for Avnet TS (now part of TD Synnex). The hum of the cooling systems, the meticulous organisation of servers, and the sheer scale of operations were striking. It was a moment that made me realise how these seemingly ordinary buildings are the silent powerhouses of our digital economy. Every online purchase, every medical record, and every digital transaction often traces back to these centres.
Today, their importance has only grown. Data centres are no longer just technical facilities—they are critical infrastructure essential to national security and economic stability. Europe, in particular, is investing heavily in expanding its data centre landscape, highlighting their vital role in enabling digital transformation. But with this rapid growth comes new challenges, particularly around cybersecurity.
Why This Matters to Me
As someone who works closely with industries reliant on critical infrastructure, I often reflect on whether we’re doing enough to protect these facilities. It’s not just the IT systems that need securing. What about the operational technologies (OT)—the cooling, power, and environmental controls that make it all work? These systems are often overlooked, yet they are just as critical as the servers they support.
During my time in Spain, I worked with many organisations navigating the complexity of managing data centres. Even then, it was clear that the operational side often flew under the radar in discussions about security. That gap remains today, and it leaves facilities vulnerable to cyber threats that could disrupt entire industries.
What I Believe Needs to Change
When I think about the future of data centres, three priorities stand out for me:
1. Know What You’re Protecting
You can’t secure what you can’t see. Gaining clear visibility into both IT and OT assets is the first step in creating a resilient infrastructure. Without this, it’s like trying to secure a house without knowing how many doors and windows it has.
2. Strengthen Your Defences
Traditional NOC services are no longer enough. With cyber threats evolving, data centres need to integrate SOC capabilities for real-time threat detection and response. This isn’t just about preventing attacks; it’s about being prepared to act when they inevitably come.
3. Bridge the Gap Between IT and OT
Cybersecurity strategies must go beyond IT systems to include seamless integration with operational technologies. This ensures that all aspects of a data centre—digital and physical—are protected in a cohesive way.
Why Now Is the Time
Europe’s increased investment in data centres is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it’s an exciting opportunity to enhance our digital infrastructure. On the other, it underscores the need to modernise our approach to security. Aligning with frameworks like NIS2 and focusing on resilience is no longer optional—it’s essential.
When I reflect on the growing importance of data centres, I see them as more than just facilities. They’re lifelines. They ensure our economy runs smoothly, our industries thrive, and our societies stay connected. But with that importance comes responsibility. We can’t afford to take their security for granted.
What’s Your Perspective?
I’d love to hear your thoughts. How do you see data centres evolving to meet the challenges of tomorrow? What strategies are working for you?
